(1) Approval of any preliminary major plat shall expire and become null and void three years after the date of preliminary plat approval.

(2) The planning commission may grant one extension of the preliminary plat approval for a period not to exceed one year; provided, that the request for an extension is filed at least 30 calendar days before the expiration of the three-year period and upon showing that the applicant has attempted in good faith to submit the final plat within the three-year period.
